Twitter

• Armed with a bit of knowledge about what Twitter is all about, share your thoughts on this fast growing online phenomenon.

Twitter seems to be a great way to pass information out to others in a quick way. It has great potential as a marketing tool....it would be useful if we remember who we are targeting in the information....

Librarything

Do you see any practical applications for LibraryThing either at home or at work? Will you start using this site?

I think this is a great way for people to have conversations and discussions about books of interest. It was easy to use and enjoyable.

Google Online Productivity Tools

Do you see free online tools like these eventually replacing expensive software like MS Office?

As the library has already been in discussion to no longer use the Microsoft product due to the cost, I can easily see this as becoming the route that is taken. I am intrigued by this as the information that google has in relation to its users is increasing daily. I think of the method they used in overriding the rights of authors to control their works by requesting the permission to publish their works/ or parts of it, the authors themselves must claim their rights. I am wondering what that means for all information on google at some point.

Youtube & Flickr

Comment on the quality, entertainment value, or usefulness of the content on these sites.

Youtube

I am quite amazed what people will place on Youtube. When we were kids and young adults, the crazy things we did could be buried where no one would ever find it. Now it is something that can haunt you world wide forever.

On the other side, this eventually will provide everyone the ability to get their fifteen minutes of fame ..... hopefully with something of their own choosing. Like so many things, the quality is minimal, the entertainment value seems to be fairly brief and the usefulness may be everyone experiencing the same thing will unify us as a people.

Flickr

I think the uploading onto Flickr is less personal in some ways....we are usually looking through a lens at the world outside of us, where Youtube is turning a camera facing out more so than facing at ourselves. Many of the images located on Flickr were breath taking and very beautiful.

RSS Feeds

I have successfully set-up at least one RSS feed. The first one I did, I wasn't sure where it saved too and then found it in my Internet "Favorites" profile. I also set up some feeds to a Bloglines account. The next day, the RSS feeds connected to my Favorites had disappeared. Is that suppose to happen? I did relocate my RSS feeds on Bloglines with ease, better yet, they were still there the following day.
Are they useful? Listing the headlines and/or summeries are a quick and dirty way of finding out news items at a glance. I do like that. Would I daily take the extra step to look at it. I think I would have to schedule a timeframe into my day. As all internet searching, time flies by quickly and before you know it, a goodly amount of time has been used.

Google

I went through several sites on Google....I found one of the most interesting sections was Google Books. With their court case settled, Google seems to be gaining control over an extensive body of information.

With respect to all that Google offers, it can organize our worlds with calendars, expand our social setting, open up the world and universe up to us through google earth and breaking news available twenty-four seven. In some ways it is quite an amazing maze of interconnectedness, in other ways, it makes one question what it means in the long term. Once we become dependent on one source, what implications does that have on our lives? It is a tool but we become more dependent on it as a source of information and we do not often question it's authenticity or authority....what does that mean for the next generation?

The newer generations are embracing and entering this new world without preconceptions or anxieties about its capabilities. Even though it brings many exciting aspects, I still find it somewhat disconcerting.

Facebook

Why do you think social networking sites are so popular? What are the main appeal factors?

I think social networking sites have become popular because of several reasons...our societal structure has changed so much that we no longer live in physical communities any longer. Our houses are built so that we do not need to connect with our neighbours and our workplaces seem to get further and further away. We no longer interact with those in our community during our daily activities and errands as we go outside our communities to do so. Facebook and similiar social networks are taking the place of these communities. We used to be able to take a walk around the block or go to the grocery store to meet and chat for social context, now we go online. It also changes who we meet and who is part of each of our communities. This in itself has many implications but I think as our physical communities change our social networks will also change.
